Normally, watching videos on someone else’s laptop is a total ball ache. There’s something not very relaxing about being summoned to peer over your boyfriend’s shoulder every two minutes, but when he showed me Azealia Bank’s video two weeks ago, the whole thing totally reset my jaded post-fashion week beautiful people button.
The video was simple enough, the rhymes and Lazy Jay’s beats were banging, but the video also looked like the sort of fashion shoots our friends do, albeit in motion pictures.
She was rapping and singing about getting her “cunt ate”, didn’t feel the need to wear half a toy shop on her head even if she did go to stage school, and you could read her Harlem roots in the fierce stares in the video, while the dancing gay twink dudes keep everything sort of happy and joyful.
Literally the next day, we rang her management and found out she would be in Paris playing a party for French magazine L’Official a few days later. Given the cost of last minute Eurostar tickets during fashion week, we had to send Sam Voulters to Paris on a bus. The journey took 11 hours, but even though he’s trying to make out her dirty lyrics made him shy, he was super-excited to meet Azealia and they got on like a house on fire.
