AS Dåvik

In line with Swedish minimalist design tradition, Anna-Sara Dåvik’s jewelry works to enhance what’s there already, i.e. your nails, instead of adding a big chunk of bling around a finger. They’re functional too, not only do these nail rings cover up broken nails, they’re the lady version of knuckle-dusters. They come in at a recession-busting 18K gold or sterling silver and in five different sizes, one for each nail. Aside from rings, A-S Dåvik also makes nail-decorated black leather gloves, and a line of butt revealing, but otherwise sophisticated, women’s clothes.

Vice: How come you’re making nail jewelry?
Anna Sara: When I was finishing my MA, I always had a bag full of fake nails in different sizes and just couldn't stop playing around with them. That gave me the idea for the jewelry. Then I improved the fit before putting them into production. They’re all handmade and produced in Sweden.

Ha. I thought you had the idea because you needed to stop biting your nails or something. You studied clothing design at Saint Martins, how come you got into jewelry?
It has to do with focus and control. Clothes are my main priority still. The jewellry is something I do around my clothes. Clothes change so often, I'm trying to build up a world of objects around them that have a longer life. My own take on classics.

When did you get into fashion?
I was 19 when I made up my mind, that I wanted to do fashion and nothing else. I grew up outside a town called Falköping and both my parents are designers and my grandmother had a fabric shop, so it was a familiar environment.

How do I go about getting my hands on your nails?

I like to work directly with the customer and take special orders, a bit like a tailoring service. I take measurements and then tailor the garments especially for the client. You can order from the collection or even something new.

I like special orders, can I order rings with my own initials instead of yours?

No.

Bummer.
