LFW: POP MEETS PRIEST
Who: Tokyo-born Rira Sugawara’s second London show was inspired by a combination of Andy Warhol and kitsch Japanese graphics. On paper I was warily hopeful, on the runway it looked like those laminated backpacks Spanish people buy from Camden market.
What: So, evidently this idea of “60s pop meets a Japanese priest” actually ends up looking like someone in the 80s imagining how the future’s going to look. Long plastic trench coats with leopard print collars were topped off with reflective round sunglasses and just loads more plastic. To be completely honest, I was slightly distracted by imagining what really would happen if 60s pop met a Japanese priest.
How: Slim silhouettes and cropped trousers would have appealed to the fash-pack if they hadn’t been in drab unwearable prints. Also, hoodies that zip all the way over your face are dangerous already, but throw on a Lichtenstein-esque print and you are in serious "three for a tenner" territory. A PVC snakeskin suit was a stand-out piece, and I can’t believe I just wrote that.
Vibe: Punkyfish-a-likes are in.
