I've tried to defend high fashion in the past when people have attacked it for being an inane waste of money and I usually don't do too badly. The trick is to let people know that they're paying for real quality, in terms of design and materials, and that spending a shit-ton of cash on clothes isn't just the "I have more money than you" equivalent of a dick fight. Annoyingly, the normally untouchable Jean Paul Gaultier had to go and cock all that hard work up for me by designing some gold bullion for a Texan company with his logo sprawled all over it, raising the price by ten percent purely because it's branded.
